7 basic tricks to keep your home safe

As the old saying goes, “There is no place like home”. It is the place where your heart is. But what if your home is not safe?
According to the article “Report to the Nation: Protecting Children in Your Home”, there are approximately 3.5 million American children sent to emergency departments annually for injuries which happen at home. The same article also found out that 2,200 children also die each year from home related accidents.
The accidents are probably due to their ignorance of home safety. The following are some basic tips that you can adapt:
Be safe in the kitchen
Keep your kitchen safe by installing dishwasher locks so the children can’t open them. Put knives, scissors, and other pointed objects in a drawer secured by a childproof latch. Keep chairs and tables away from stoves.
Proper lighting
Light your home properly. It is alright to cut electric bills by dimming or turning off some lights. However, do not overdo it and make your home a dangerous place. Choose and buy compact fluorescent light bulbs. They lit longer and are more energy efficient than common incandescent light bulbs. Similarly, the most important places to light up are the top and bottom of stairs and room entrances. Place your light bulbs or lamps in such a way that you won’t have to cross dark rooms to turn them on.
Improve your balance. Practice Tai Chi and other activities which can help you be steady on your feet. In this way, injuries are less likely to happen.
Material Safety Data Sheet Find msds online .
Study material safety data sheet. These data sheets contain information about hazardous materials or chemicals. They also contain information about safety procedures in handling these materials. Take note that there are some household substances or chemicals that may be considered as hazardous, like aerosol and formaldehyde.
These data sheets are usually made for workers who are exposed to hazardous substances or chemicals at work. However, consumers can also request these data sheets from companies who are manufacturing hazardous chemicals.
Radon Test
Request for a Radon Test. When Uranium naturally decays, it releases a radioactive gas called “radon”. For non-smokers, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer. In case you are building your new home, see to it that your contractors, engineers, and architects use radon-resistant construction methods. Also request for a radon test when you buy a house. Contact your local radon office for more information.
Hostile Fire and Smoke Alarms
In a fire break out, small children usually die first because they can hardly escape on their own. To prevent this from happening, install smoke alarms, preferably interconnected smoke alarms. Smoke alarms warn people that there is an impending fire. Conduct a regular inspection to determine if they are working properly. You’ll never know when they will come in handy.
Keep burglars in check. Do not leave notes outside your house for service or delivery personnel. This is a sign to burglars that you are not home.

These basic tips can surely help you be safe in your home. Don’t be ignorant about safety. If you have time, study on how you can secure and protect your family from house-related accidents and injuries.
